Secretary Zhang felt a sense of relief at the doctorâs words.
âThank you, doctor,â he said repeatedly, grateful for any bit of hope.
âYouâre welcome. However, the patient is still in the ICU for observation. You can go ahead and handle the necessary paperwork,â the doctor kindly reminded him.
Realizing there wasnât much he could do at the hospital for the moment, Secretary Zhang went to take care of the accidentâs aftermath.
After an investigation by the traffic police, it was discovered that the accident had been caused by the truck driverâs fatigue and the reduced visibility due to rain.
Secretary Zhang managed these matters diligently, knowing that some details would have to wait until Mr. Gu woke up.
As time passed, the next day arrived, but Gu Shaoting showed no signs of waking up, making Secretary Zhang increasingly anxious.
Internally, he pleaded, Mr. Gu, please wake up. There are so many things waiting for you at the company, and Mrs. Gu would be worried sick.
He paced outside the ICU, fervently praying for Gu Shaotingâs recovery.
It wasnât until the afternoon that He Ming finally arrived, looking travel-worn but determined.
He Ming had booked the earliest flight after hearing the news, not divulging the real reason to Xiaomeng to avoid inadvertently alarming Shu Pan. He feared the shock might affect both pregnant women.
âHow is he, Secretary Zhang?â He Ming asked urgently.
âVice President He, youâre finally here. He hasnât woken up yet. The doctor said he should wake up today,â Secretary Zhang felt slightly more at ease with He Mingâs presence.
âLetâs wait then,â He Ming said, not even bothering to put down his luggage. âHow are things at the company?â
Since He Ming didnât handle the overseas market, he wasnât fully updated on the situation.
âEverythingâs on track. The partnership with Tiansheng Corporation has been well-received in the industry, leading to more orders. Mr. Gu was planning to return the day after tomorrow. Who knew this would happen?â Secretary Zhangâs eyes reddened as he spoke, unable to meet He Mingâs gaze.
Itâs true, he thought, that man proposes, but God disposes. Who knows what tomorrow brings?
âThatâs good to hear. You should rest a bit; Iâll take over here,â He Ming said, feeling a pang of sympathy for his friend who seemed to attract trouble.
âIâm fine. Youâve been on a long flight; you should rest,â Secretary Zhang shook his head, not wanting to leave Mr. Guâs side.
âAlright, letâs both wait for him to wake up,â He Ming agreed, praying internally for Gu Shaotingâs recovery. He couldnât imagine how he would break the news to Shu Pan otherwise.
As evening approached, they finally received good news.
âAre you the family of the patient in bed 36? Heâs woken up,â the doctorâs voice was a godsend.
âThank you so much, doctor,â He Ming said, his hands clasped in gratitude.
âHeâs out of the critical phase, but weâll need to conduct a full-body check later. Heâs being moved to a regular ward now; you can visit him there,â the doctor informed them before leaving.
âGot it,â He Ming replied. As soon as the doctor left, he and Secretary Zhang headed to the regular ward.
Pushing open the door, they saw Gu Shaoting lying in bed, connected to various medical apparatuses.
They approached quietly, noticing his eyelids fluttering.
âShaotingâŠâ He Ming called softly into his ear.
After a few calls, Gu Shaoting finally responded, slowly opening his eyes.
Before he could see clearly, he mumbled, âPanpanâŠâ
His voice was dry and hoarse, making it difficult to hear without leaning in. He Ming realized he was calling for Shu Pan.
âShaoting, itâs me, your buddy, Ming,â He Ming said gently.
Gu Shaoting finally opened his eyes fully.
